Louisville's First Skyscraper, The Kenyon Building

Opened 1886, razed in the 1970s (could not find an exact date). Located at 112 S. Fifth St.; site currently occupied by Michael Graves' beautiful Humana Building. Only photo I could find of the structure. From what I can see, it had some unique design elements - note the partial turret and ovoid window on the 6th floor...

  1. Where did you find the photo? Is it copyrighted?

  2. It’s been a few years since I posted this. I don’t remember where I got it. I either scanned it out of a book at the Louisville Free Public Library or found it on UofL’s digital archive. Don’t know if it’s copyrighted or not but feel free to use it. As long as you don’t tangibly benefit from the image (and I don’t from this blog), I don’t see how it’d be any harm.

  3. In the early 70's I was an engineering student at the University of Louisville and worked as an intern for Hubbard E. Rudy Consulting Engineers, which occupied the top floor of the Kenyon Building. I believe it was demolished in 1974.
