NE Corner of 4th and Walnut (Muhammad Ali): Pre-1913

The Starks Building has anchored the NE corner of 4th and Walnut (Muhammad Ali) since 1913, but it replaced two structures that were landmarks in their own right: First Christian Church (left) and the famed Macauley's Theatre (center-right). Nothing in this picture remains today. It dates to pre-1907 because to get this north-looking, Walnut St. between 4th and 3rd view of the two buildings, the photographer had to stand on the SE corner of the intersection and a little down 4th. Stewart's Dept. Store opened for business 4/15/1907 on that exact spot and thus, would've completely prevented this view. The church was gone by 1911 or so; Macauley's by the mid '20s.

Note: First Christian left this structure for a new house of worship at 4th and Breckinridge (now Lampton Baptist). I can't verify this, but I've heard some of the columns in this photo were transplanted to the new - now also old - building.
